Project Overview

Jali is a platform designed to simplify the booking process for beauty and wellness services, offering both onsite and offsite options. The goal was to create a seamless experience where clients can easily browse services, book appointments with trusted professionals, and manage their schedules effortlessly—all in one place.

Problem

Clients struggle to find and book reliable beauty services with ease.

Users face challenges in discovering trusted professionals, comparing prices, and securing appointments without unnecessary delays. Many prefer receiving services at home to avoid long waits at salons, but there is no streamlined way to arrange offsite bookings efficiently.

Solution

Easy booking for clients

Design Thinking Process

A user-centered approach guided the development of Jali, ensuring that every design decision was rooted in real user needs.

Competitor Analysis

Competitors treat offsite services as optional, requiring providers to manually indicate availability.

Through an analysis of StyleSeat, Booksy, and Fresha, I examined their product offerings, unique selling points, and mobile app experiences. While these platforms support mobile appointments, they do not prioritize offsite services as a core feature. Users must manually search for providers who offer mobile services, leading to a less seamless booking experience.

This gap presents an opportunity for Jali to stand out by fully integrating offsite services, making it effortless for users to find mobile professionals and for service providers to manage bookings.

User Interview Process

Users preferred booking services that offered flexibility, clear pricing, and trusted professionals.

To gain a deeper understanding of how clients discover and book beauty services, we conducted interviews with potential users of the app. These conversations provided valuable insights into their booking habits, pain points with current methods, and expectations for a more seamless experience.

Some of the Research Questions:

  • How do you currently find and book beauty services?

  • What factors influence your decision when choosing a stylist or salon?

  • What challenges have you faced when booking appointments online?

  • Do you prefer onsite or offsite services, and why?

  • How important are verified reviews and detailed service descriptions in your decision-making process?

The Main Insight

Users prioritize flexibility, clear pricing, and trust when booking beauty services.

Through the user interviews, three key themes emerged:

User Persona

To better understand our target audience, I created a user persona representing the typical client who would use Jali to book beauty services.

Design

Balancing flexibility and structure was key to optimizing the booking experience.

Initially, I aimed for a highly customizable booking flow, allowing users to freely communicate with service providers. However, user research revealed that too much flexibility led to confusion and inconsistencies in pricing and availability. To address this, I refined the design to ensure clear service options, structured booking steps, and transparent pricing while still allowing users to personalize their experience with add-ons, notes, and offsite service requests.

Conclusions and Insights

Through this process, I gained valuable insights into user needs and design decision-making. If I were to do this again, I would:

  • Test micro-interactions more thoroughly – Small UX elements, like tooltips and icons, play a big role in usability. More focus on micro-interactions during early design phases would have helped refine the experience faster.

  • Balance simplicity with detail – Users appreciate a seamless booking experience but also want enough information to make informed choices. Finding the right balance between simplicity and detail is key to a frictionless design.
